Tony Gee completed the detailed design for a £4.8m landmark pedestrian bridge over the River Aire in Castleford.

The 131 m long, 4 m wide footbridge was the catalyst for further regeneration of the Castleford Bay area, which was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary series, “Kevin McCloud and the Big Town Plan”.

The continuous steel thin box section deck is supported on three sets of striking ‘V’ shaped steel piers. The slender deck incorporates seating within the depth of the structure, and the bridge has a hardwood timber finish. Concealed lighting within the handrails and spotlighting enhance visual impact, enabling the bridge to be the pinnacle of the regeneration that it represents.
